About Scholarships
Scholarships are non-repayable forms of gift or financial aid awarded by universities to help further a student’s education. They can be awarded for many different reasons and are usually based on certain criteria, requirements and/or academic achievements that students receive to pursue their studies. Application deadlines for scholarships vary and sometimes universities will consider you for a scholarship without you applying to one if you meet the opportunity’s criteria. In many other cases, you will be able to apply for a university scholarship once you have been accepted onto a course programme and received an offer. Most colleges, universities and organisations will list their scholarship opportunities online where applicants will be able to find different scholarships, including international, course subject and country-specific scholarships or applicable funding opportunities. Eligibility and other details will be found on these websites where you will also be able to view the different key deadlines, which will depend on the academic start dates.
Full Scholarships
Full scholarships will cover the whole university terms i.e. three or four years or whatever your course duration length and all expenses related at the university. While these scholarships are limited and competitive, you may still be able to find them through research online. Students usually earn these scholarships by standing out from the pool of candidates and through academic merit, history, leadership and so on. Some of the most notable full-funded scholarships awarded in the United Kingdom include the Chevening Scholarships, which are awarded by the UK government to individuals. Over 50,000 people have studied through Chevening with awards available in worldwide countries and territories. More information can be found on the official Chevening website here. Other best-known scholarships are the Commonwealth Scholarships where they award a range of PhD, Masters and Distance Learning scholarships. More information about what they offer is explained on their website.
Partial Scholarships
Generally there are a wider range of partial scholarships available compared to full that cover a combination of associated university costs, most typically tuition fees. They will most commonly be advertised for specific programmes, international students or those who hold high academic profiles and/or merit.
