Accommodation
Deciding where to live when at university is an important decision. If you’re moving abroad to study at university and considering off-campus accommodation, it may be difficult finding a reliable guarantor. As an international student, you may need some assistance getting started or finding accommodation. While living off-campus can have its own pros, a guarantor will always be a part of your accommodation.
What is a Guarantor?
When you move to the United Kingdom, you will be asked for a guarantor. As the name suggests, a guarantor is someone who gives or acts as a guarantee: meaning they will agree to pay your rent if you don’t pay it. The guarantor could be a parent or close relative and they would pay the landlord if you don’t pay what you owe them. By becoming a guarantor, that person will agree to fulfil rental commitments if you do not follow them.
Who can be a Guarantor?
A guarantor usually adds credibility and assurance to the application and meets the following conditions:
  • Is a UK resident
  • Over 21 years old
  • Good credit history
  • Financial stability
